Phyllanthus mirabilis 是大戟科油柑屬中極少數具備膨大塊莖（Caudex）的泰國原生種植物。它最令人著迷的是強烈的「睡眠運動（Nyctinasty）」——日間如飛鳥般展開半透明的紅褐色複葉，夜間則規律閉合。
自然界中擁有紅葉的植物一般比綠葉稀少，加上葉片會像合歡含羞草等開合的則更少，奇異油柑正正兩者兼備，它深紅的大葉會隨光線變化晝開夜合，甚講求效率，所有葉只為光而打開，務求在不必要的場合決不會浪費過多的水分蒸散。
